How to adjust printhead pressure

Adjusting the printhead pressure on the Zebra ZT230 ensures even, consistent print quality across the full width of your labels. If you notice faded edges, uneven printing, or one side printing darker than the other, the printhead pressure needs adjustment.

When to adjust printhead pressure

  • One side of the label prints lighter or darker than the other
  • Print quality is inconsistent across label width
  • You have switched to a wider or narrower label stock
  • Labels are wrinkling or the ribbon is creasing during printing

Before you start

  • Make sure ribbon and media are loaded correctly
  • Have a few test labels ready to print after each adjustment
  • Print a configuration label first to see current settings: hold Feed for 2 seconds at startup

Steps

Step 1 — Locate the printhead pressure adjusters

Open the printer cover. You will see two adjustment dials (one on each side of the printhead assembly) — these control the left and right pressure independently.

Step 2 — Adjust the pressure

Turn each dial to change the pressure:

  • Turn clockwise to increase pressure (darker print)
  • Turn counter-clockwise to decrease pressure (lighter print)

Make small adjustments — typically a quarter turn at a time. Adjust the left and right dials independently to even out any imbalance.

Step 3 — Print a test label

Close the cover and send a test print. Check that print quality is even across the full width of the label.

Step 4 — Repeat if needed

If one side is still lighter, open the cover and adjust only the dial on that side. Repeat until the print is balanced and clear.

Tip: Start with the lowest pressure that still produces clear, consistent prints — excessive pressure wears out the printhead faster.

⚠ Important: If you cannot achieve even print quality after several adjustments, the printhead may be worn or dirty. Contact IT at extension 7225 for further assistance.
